Business grants in Brighouse
Posted on Aug 16, 2005
Three businesses have been recently supported by Calderdale MBC's Economic Development Unit to secure grant aid. These projects have been part-funded by Yorkshire Forward, with match funding from the businesses themselves.
GT Architectural Metal Services Limited, a metal fabrication company on Birds Royd Lane in Brighouse has received a Yorkshire Forward grant of £5,059 as a contribution towards installing perimeter electrical three phase cabling and sockets, as well as two new gas fired unit heaters. The grant panel were pleased to support this expanding business, which created 4 jobs through the grant application.
Ploughcroft Building Services Ltd, a building and roofing company from Owler Ings Road in Brighouse, has received a Yorkshire Forward Grant of £23,594 as a contribution towards a training facility for the roofing and high level operations maintenance trade. Training will be given to NVQ Level 2, the Directors are applying to be instructors and assessors so that it can all be done in-house. They are proposing day release training as experience has taught them that block release causes problems for the employer of that trainee. The proposal also seeks to fund a mobile unit, which can be taken to schools and colleges to deliver vocational training in basic roofing skills.
The benefits of providing such a training facility in Calderdale are:
1. Filling the gap in the local area and region with skills training in roofing and operations maintenance.
2. Improvement of skills of current roofing and maintenance workforce and therefore creation of more jobs for skilled operatives and trainees.
3. Support to local contractors in the area with on site training in roofing and high level skills that will improve labour skills and abilities and create additional jobs in the long term.
4. Allow the implementation of Government policy in connection with vocational training in schools for 14 – 17 year olds.
Potential trainees in this trade currently have to travel to Leeds and Wakefield for their training, with waiting lists that can reach a few years. This facility will allow individuals to achieve the qualifications required, here in Calderdale.

The Montessori school proposal is only the second one in Calderdale. This new business will be located in mill cottages at the Old Corn Mill site on Wakefield Road, Brighouse. The applicant has received a Yorkshire Forward grant of £24,157 as a contribution towards the conversion of the mill cottages to a Montessori School. The proposal will bring back into use the Grade II listed cottages and create 5 jobs.
